It's Not Fair

Sometimes that's what we want to yell, from the rooftops, but in our grown up minds we know the truth, life isn't fair.

This sentiment was never more clear to me than this morning during the Baby Steps class I go to at Down Syndrome Connection. We had a new family there with a newborn baby. This couple had done the AFP test early in their pregnancy and were told their baby was fine. Needless to say, when they were given the diagnosis of Down Syndrome two weeks after birth, it rocked their world. They were a couple from India, and the husband shared that they were very religious when she had conceived and then mentioned several other things they had "done right", so he just couldn't understand why their baby had been born with Down Syndrome. What he was saying without saying it was "It's not fair! It's just not fair!"

It was honestly very sad and I don't know that there is much we could have said to them that would have really made a difference- right now. Hopefully their reality is that as their baby grows and as they continue through the grieving process, they will come to a place of acceptance and love for their little girl.
