Aaron and I had an opportunity to meet with the surgeon who
would be working on Matthew and to take a tour of Oakland Children’s Hospital.
The parts I remember most about this are 1. Aaron’s GPS put us in a shady part
of Oakland- okay, seriously, is there NOT a shady part of Oakland- which
provided quite a bit of laughs and 2. When we finally got to the hospital and
pulled into the parking garage, we weren’t really sure the car was going to
fit. I was ducking. Aaron actually stuck his hand out the car window and could
hit the cement rook. It was a bit nerve wracking but also provided a bit of
comic relief. Pretty much, Aaron and I
are funny people, especially when we are together
.
After meeting with the surgeon (nothing too exciting to
report about that), we were taken on a tour of the hospital. We got to see how
we were going to have to “scrub in” every time we went to see him, the stupid
gowns we would have to wear, the three different nurseries he could be in, the
rooms where I would pump, all of it. It was very eye opening and made me a bit
nervous. Not to mention seeing all the super tiny babies- I was relieved to
know our baby wouldn’t be that small. I
also was happy to hear that I could bring his own blankets and clothes. It seemed
kind of silly to ask but I just felt like being able to do that would somehow
normalize the situation.
