For his 4th birthday, Isaac got $4 from his Auntie M. He found it again in the card this morning so I told him we could go to Walmart and he could pick out a toy with his birthday money. He was all over this!
When we got to Walmart we headed to the toy aisle. Along the way Isaac saw some Angry Bird plush animals, he pointed them out and said he liked them, but I had to tell him they were "out of his budget" because they were $8. He says, "Yeah, and I have $4, right?" Once we got to the toy department we started at the Lego aisle. He would see something he liked and say, "Is that in my budget?" I really wanted to pitch in a couple dollars so he could get a Lego kit, but decided that would defeat the purpose. We had no luck in the Lego aisle so we continued on, he kept looking and asking if something was "in his budget." He was very careful about what he wanted to buy. Eventually we made it to the Cars 2 aisle and he very excitedly declared, "I want one of these!" So we picked one of each and he laid them all on the ground and then picked..."Grem"- one of the bad guys. I must say, I was a little surprised at this, but not wanting him to question his decision, I didn't ask more than once, "Are you sure this is the one you want?"
Our checker was very sweet and understanding when he very slowly, dollar by dollar handed her his $4. She put the car in his very own bag with his receipt and then handed him his change, which was also met with a good amount of excitement. It was a very sweet first shopping experience. He's already planning how he is going to spend his birthday money next year.
